Darius Rucker headlines the 2017 PGA Tour Champions American Family Insurance Championship concert at Breese Stevens Field in Madison, WI.

The 2nd annual championship is kicked off by Grammy winner, Darius Rucker, along with Corey Smith and The Ryan McGrath Band. All proceeds from the concert will go to Steve Stricker’s American Family Insurance Foundation.

The weekend may be all about the golfing championship which has attracted famous faces such as Brett Favre and Derek Jetter, but tonight it’s all about the music.

Breese Stevens Field is the perfect venue for this sunny evening, with something for everyone – VIP area, gold circle, bleachers and also the field area for those wanting to take it easy and relax on their own blankets.

Madison’s own Ryan McGrath Band warm up the crowd as they trickle in.  This blues/rock band look at ease which is not surprising since they have previously opened for the likes of Jennifer Hudson. Ryan provides the perfect musical blend of blues rock guitar coupled with that country twang as he sings.

Corey Smith turns the country up a notch, as he performs his own written material, something that he is rightly proud of. That’s not to say he doesn’t squeeze in the odd cover such as his version of Adele’s “Someone Like You”, which you can’t imagine working in this style but does. This is Corey’s biggest audience to date, but he doesn’t look the least bit daunted. Instead, he appears to be lapping up the atmosphere and the warm reception he is clearly receiving from the Madison crowd. Mind you, with 11 years in the business, and 10 albums under his belt, it would take a lot more than an adoring crowd to phase this guy.

As the sun sets on this beautiful evening, it’s time for Darius Rucker and his sizable band to take to the stage. By this time, there is barely any gaps left as the field is crammed full of people eager to see the ex-Hootie & the Blowfish singer. Rucker has successfully reinvented himself as a country star, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Solo Country Performance as well as achieving several number 1 hit singles. This more than proves he has successfully transitioned to the world of country.

Rucker is backed by not only the most talented, multi-instrumental band but also by the happiest band. Donning their beaming smiles throughout the night, they all looked like they are enjoying their time performing on the stage.

Rucker has the audience in the palm of his hand – passionately singing along and dancing with one another. Closing out the night with his huge hit “Wagon Wheel” which had the audience almost drowning out the band as they sing along, it’s fair to see this night has been a clear success.

Here’s hoping this will be a recurring event. It will surely be welcomed back with open arms.
