On Saturday April 14, 2018, the Roll & Roll Hall of Fame inducted its class of 2018 culminating a week of events and activities at the museum.
Located on the shores of Lake Erie in Cleveland, OH, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame conducts an annual celebration of new inductees including artists, producers, engineers and those who shaped the world of music. This years class includes Bon Jovi, The Cars, The Moody Blues, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Dire Straits, and Nina Simone. The organization’s 33rd annual ceremony kicked off with Celebration Day on Saturday, April 7th with free admission to the hall, various children’s events, free music, and a boat, or should we say a food truck’s, worth of food and beverages.
The hall was packed and the line-up stretched around the building as fans waiting to see artifacts, costumes, and other unique memorabilia from their favorite stars. The hall was also showcasing their newly renovated hall of signatures and the new Voice Your Choice, where fans get to vote on who they would like to see on future nomination ballots.
Live music filled the first-floor stage area while fans flooded the retail store in search of a unique souvenir. The Power of Rock Experience was a visual and audio show that captures the excitement of the Hall’s Induction Night featuring a variety of unique and iconic jam sessions. The entire fifth and sixth floors were dedicated to a display diving deep into the 50-year history of Rolling Stone Magazine exploring its catalytic effect on politics, popular culture and artists careers.
Outside on the LIVE stage, performances took place throughout the day culminating with headlining act RSO, featuring 2018 inductee Richie Sambora and Orianthi. Even with mother nature putting a little chill on everyone, no one left and the night climaxed with a fireworks show over the Cleveland skyline.
The class of 2018 was chosen from a group of 19 nominees, including Radiohead, who many were shocked when they didn’t make it. Each year, between five and seven acts usually make it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame following a vote by performers, music historians, and industry experts. Fans are also given the chance to vote via the Hall’s website. In order to qualify, an artist must have released their first recording in 1992 or earlier.
The actual induction ceremony took place on Saturday April 14, 2018 at Public Auditorium in Cleveland and will be broadcasted on HBO on May 5th and it can also be heard on SiriusXM Radio, plus for the first time ever the events red carpet will be live streamed on Cleveland.com. Handling the inductions will be presenters and special guests including Howard Stern, Mary J. Blige, and Lauryn Hill.
