The joyful kiss of rock music played with passion greeted fans at 20 Monroe Live during the performance by Magpie Salute.
The nursery rhyme regarding the number of magpies you see says “One for sorrow, Two for joy, Three for a girl, Four for a boy, Five for silver, Six for gold…” With six magpies on the stage, the prospect is high for golden music from Magpie Salute. The band’s first studio album called High Water was released on August 10th and the band is in town to give us a taste.
Magpie Salute was formed in 2016 by guitarist/songwriter Rich Robinson and includes former Black Crowes guitarist Marc Ford and bassist Sven Pipien. Rounding out the band is vocalist John Hogg, keyboardist Matt Slocum and drummer Joe Magistro.
Starting off the evening is Wayland who take their name from their hometown of Wayland, Michigan. These guys are a double espresso of rock and roll. Making full use of the ample stage at 20 Monroe Live, Wayland is on a mission to make sure the crowd has a much fun as they do. Wayland has been touring relentlessly in support of their most recent album Rinse and Repeat. There are many fans who know every song by heart and sing along. The nostalgia influenced song “Indian Jones” plays a chord with fans who enthusiastically embrace the look back at growing up in the 8o’s.
As the relaxing scent of incense wafts from the stage, the house lights come down and Magpie Salute takes the stage. The Pink Floydish psychedelic pulse of “High Water” gets the room humming. The electric vibrations of “Mary The Gypsy” pick up the pace with steady rock. Clearly Magpie Salute are all birds of a feather as they telepathically connect on stage. Their performance is one of seamlessly spinning music as it reveals the myriad influences of each member.
While the focus of tonight’s show by Magpie Salute is on the new album, they journey into the solo work of Marc Ford with “Old Lady Sunrise” and Rich Robinson on “Inside”. These songs reveal the origins of the Magpie Salute sound which melds the musical creativity of each member of the band. They also pay tribute to Ronnie Lane (Small Faces) with a two for Tuesday on a Wednesday by playing “April Fool” and “Rollin’ Over”. John Hogg’s impassioned vocals capture the sad beauty within “April Fool”. Unfortunately, during this quieter acoustic song, chatter in the crowd forces Rich Robinson to ask if these fans are actually here to listen to music. This momentarily takes the wind out of the sails of the show, but Magpie Salute quickly recover with “Walk On Water” and “For The Wind” from the High Water album.
Magpie Salute’s cover of Blind Faith’s “Had To Cry Today” is phenomenal. The drums of Joe Magistro and bass of Sven Pipien propel the song as Marc and Rich play inspiring renditions of Clapton’s glorious guitar solos. Taking us into the final stretch, the band jams the Black Crowes “Horsehead” and “Soul Singing”. Both songs feel right at home on this stage. Magpie Salute close out their performance with the spirited rocker “Send Me An Omen”. This song encapsulates everything that is great about this performance by Magpie Salute; passionate music created my musicians who sift through their varied influences to reveal something new.
