Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees Heart performed a powerful set at the Hollywood Bowl, backed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
Ann and Nancy Wilson have always been trailblazers. They were the first women to front a hard rock band and have a string of hits as a tribute to their success. This past weekend at the Hollywood Bowl, they blazed a new trail, performing their signature hits as well as several covers backed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by HBO principal conductor, Thomas Wilkins.
Heart bookended their set with Zeppelin, opening with a lush, orchestral “Kashmir,†and closing the main set with “Stairway to Heaven,†which they previously played at the Kennedy Center, in a performance that brought a tear to Robert Plant’s eye. Ann Wilson’s powerhouse vocals, some of the best in rock, were perfectly suited to the material and she received one of several standing ovations for her take on the rock classic.
The concert also featured many, but not all, of Hearts hits, with them receiving a huge response for “What About Love†early in the set. Nancy brought her lovely vocals to the forefront for a cover of Elton John’s “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, †which was followed by another audience favorite, “These Dreams.â€
After the main set was over Heart took the stage sans orchestra, to tear through “Barracuda,†and “Crazy for You.â€
Opening act Liv Warfield was a revelation. The New Power Generation member turned in an energetic set, also backed by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, of audacious rock-tinged jazz and r&B that was absolutely brilliant. I think it’s safe to say she blew away the entire Bowl with her intense vocals and rock star presence.
