The roots of Anvil began in April 1973 in Toronto, when high school friends Steve “Lips” Kudlow and Robb Reiner began playing music together. They released their first album in 1981 under the band name of Lips morphing into Anvil shortly after.
Their second album, Metal On Metal, is one die-hard metalheads seem to list as a favorite. After a couple of more releases, the band faded off into obscurity.
Their 2008 movie documentary, The Story Of Anvil, made them famous the world over. The film received high praise and put Anvil back into the public consciousness, propelling them to play several festivals, including the Download Festival in 2009 at which they headlined the Tuborg stage. Rolling Stone called the movie “the year’s most praised rock doc.” The band has been hard at work touring everywhere and anywhere since the release of the documentary.
In 2013, Anvil released their 15th studio album, Hope In Hell. Currently out on the road in support of this new release, they made a stop at the Backstage Bar & Billiards in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 20th, 2014.
Our photographer, John Barry, was on hand to catch them in their show. Here are the images from that night.
