Tonight, the North East’s blues rock faithful packed out one of the region’s most loved venues, The Cluny in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, to welcome the return of Stevie Nimmo, one half of the renowned Nimmo Brothers. Brother Alan Nimmo is currently enjoying great success with his band, King King.
Stevie’s last album, The Wynds Of Life recorded in Austin, Texas, saw a slight change in direction, entering into the Americana genre with an acoustic format showcasing his great voice and song writing ability.
This time around, Stevie returns with his trusty axe to introduce us to his latest project, the fully electrified blues rock outfit, The Stevie Nimmo Trio. The powerful three-piece is made up of Stevie Nimmo (vocals, guitar), Mat Beable (bass) and Craig Bacon (drums).
The band took to the stage to the familiar intro from British TV sitcom, Only Fools and Horses, before treating the crowd to a superb well-balanced set infused with captivating guitar solos, new material, and electrified versions of tracks from The Wynds Of Life. The audience clapped their way through Good Day For The Blues before a superb cover of The Storm by Scottish blues legend, Big George and The Business. Stevie stated they were the first blues band he ever saw perform live. A brilliant rendition of Eye Of The Storm brought the main set to a close leaving the crowd stamping their feet and chanting for more. The band returned to the stage to bring the night to a close with an exceptional cover of Going Down, made famous by the legendary Freddie King and resulting in rapturous applause.
Many of the crowd in attendance tonight had seen Stevie perform previously either solo or with the Nimmo Brothers and were eagerly anticipating hearing what his new project had to offer. They were not disappointed.
