I wonder if John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy, the founding member of the band Dream Theater, thought they would remain as successful as they have been through the past 20 years while not achieving mainstream success. However the lack of mainstream success has contributed to the band developing one of the most loyal fan bases in the history of the rock genre.
Yes, their music is not for everyone. Its methodical, progressive rock with a little jazz-fusion mixed in. But it is the high level of musicianship of each of their members and the musical detail in which they deliver a live performance that is nothing short of amazing.
They played Saturday night, March 29th, to a sold out crowd at historic Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Although drummer Portnoy is no longer with the band, Mike Mangini has done a fantastic job since joining in 2011.
Playing three hours with a short ten-minute break, James Labrie’s sweet vocals were crisp and clean. He, along with the rest of the band led by John Petrucci, one of rock guitar greats, filled the arena with a perfect sound diving into over twenty songs. A cool video screen just behind them filled almost the entire length of the stage and added additional atmosphere.
Dream Theater is a band you should not miss. They are on a long tour. Catch them if you can!
