One of the most anticipated bands to play Detroit finally came to be this past Monday at The Shelter underneath St. Andrews Hall in Detroit. The joint was packed elbow to elbow, the anticipation thick as the crowd jostled amongst themselves to pack in close to the stage for the Swedish juggernaut that is Graveyard. Back in the states on a headlining tour with Venice, CA. based The Shrine opening for them, they fired right in to their set, blistering out their heavy, fuzzy sound reminiscent of 70s rock bands. Touring in support of their newly released album Lights Out, they played for nearly two hours, feeding off the high energy of the crowd. You could tell they were pleased to see such a turn out as they became more intense throughout the night, and they did not disappoint. Gotta give props to openers The Shrine too, who were a perfect fit to open for Graveyard bringing their own self-labeled “psychedelic violence” sound to the room. They fit the bill perfectly with their frantic hellacious sound spawned from years of skating and Black Flag albums cranked to 11 in their headphones.

Topping off the night, myself and fellow Detroiter Jason Quayle (Banned From Earth/Banned From Hell) conducted a short interview with Jonatan and Axel of Graveyard on the tour bus, then ended up carpooling both bands to The Majestic for a post show night of bowling, drinking, a 3am tour of Detroit and some other interesting things we can’t talk about in this blog. Catch these bands through the end of February while you can!
