The Whitesnake axeman gets ready to release the debut album from his new all-star side project.

Joel Hoekstra is best known for his work with Night Ranger, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Rock of Ages, and more recently as a result of his formidable partnership with Reb Beech as part of Whitesnake. However, it’s time for a new chapter in Joel’s career to unfold as he unleashes the debut album, Dying To Live, from his new side project, Joel Hoekstra’s 13.

Following on from Joel’s previous instrumental solo albums, there was a demand from his fan base to put out an album of vocal hard rock songs. Subsequently, Hoekstra called upon many of his friends to assemble a veritable “who’s who” of the rock world on Dying To Live. The album features Jeff Scott Soto (vocals), Russell Allen (vocals), Tony Franklin (bass), Vinny Appice (drums), Derek Sherinian (keyboard), and more.

Dying To Live includes a whole host of hard rocking numbers. The opening track, “Say Goodbye To The Sun,” and title track “Dying To Live” sit side by side with the likes of “Never Say Never” and “Start Again,” which are built for mainstream radio play and destined to be hits. The high-caliber of tracks like “Long For The Days” and “Changes” would just as easily feel at home as part of the Whitesnake songbook.

Derek Sherinian proves to be the perfect foil for Joel particularly on the likes of “Anymore.” It is one of the standout tracks of the album and features incredible vocals from Russell Allen with an almost euphoric chorus and a textbook Hoekstra solo. Closing the album is another gem in the shape of “What We Believe” and a spell binding duet between Jeff Scott Soto and Chloe Lowery from Trans Siberian Orchestra, sublime vocal harmonies from the pair.

With Dying To Live, you not only get an album which highlights Hoekstra’s phenomenal playing, but also his talent as a songwriter and a producer. The album is melodic hard rock at it’s best. Dying To Live has something for everyone, with such an impressive array of talent you would expect nothing less than a classic in the making. We look forward to more of what is to come from this very exciting project.

Dying To Live by Joel Hoekstra’s 13 will be released on the 16th October via Frontier Records.
