Paul Carrack makes a welcome return to the North East of England performing in front of a packed out audience at the Sage Gateshead.
Tonight marks the second of Paul Carrack’s two-night residency at this impressive concert hall. Of course, the first show of which sold out very quickly and subsequently this additional date was added due to the unprecedented demand.
Taking to the stage along with his formidable six-piece band Paul Carrack kicks off the show with some of his classic solo material including a couple of tracks from the Satisfy My Soul album.
The much celebrated British singer/songwriter is getting ready to release his new album These Days later this year and this evening he takes the opportunity to give the audience a taste of what is to come. Several tracks from Carrack’s forthcoming release features in the show including the likes of the soulful “Amazing What Love Can Do” and the beautiful “Life In A Bubble”. The latter of which features Paul on piano. In addition during the course of the evening, the multi-instrumentalist grapples with guitar, Hammond, and harmonica proving he can turn his hand to anything and do it all well.
Mid-set the format is changed up somewhat. An acoustic trio featuring both Carrack and his drummer son Jack delivers a short stripped back set. This includes the likes of Paul’s superb take on Jackie DeShannon’s “When You Walk In The Room”, the heartfelt “That’s All That Matters to Me” and new song “Dig Deep”.
Having had a long and successful career in the music industry that includes stints with both Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics during the final third of the show Carrack performs back to back hits and fan favourites from his days with some of rock music’s finest. This includes a lively performance of “Tempted”, “Love Will Keep Us Alive” which was later recorded by The Eagles, a harmonious airing of “The Living Years” before closing the set with the timeless classic “How Long”. Paul and the band leave the stage to a well-earned standing ovation.
Following a brief interlude, a two-song encore that includes the anthemic Mike and the Mechanics number “Over My Shoulder” and Marvin Gaye’s soul classic “What’s Going On” close out a stunning 90-minute performance at the Sage Gateshead.
Paul Carrack is often referred to as ‘The Man with the Golden Voice’ and during tonight’s career-spanning show it’s easy to understand why. All night long whilst delivering tracks from his impressive songbook he showcases the spellbinding talent which earned him that well-deserved title.
With a career spanning in excess of forty years, Paul Carrack is still going strong and showing no signs of slowing down.
