Down brought a little Southern flavor with their East Bound ‘N Down tour to Northern Indiana.

Pure metal heavyweights Down (ADA/Warner), fronted by Pantera’s Phil Anselmo, made a pit stop at Piere’s in Fort Wayne to a formidable Friday night crowd. The New Orleans metal group with musicians from Eyehategod, Crowbar, Corrosion of Conformity, and Goatwhore gave the audience an immersive metal experience. They don’t tour all the time, or cut a record all the time, adding to the mystery they perpetuate when they come to your town. You’d better go to see them or you might have to wait for a while.

Anselmo is the type of guy who has his iron in a lot of fires and seems to command an almost godlike persona to a plethora of adoring fans. From founding New Orleans’ craziest and world’s famous haunted attraction, House Of Shock, Anselmo deserves his status and commands the stage like a Mad Max master villain.

Coming along from New Orleans for the tour was Mountain Of Wizard, an instrumental quartet of classic rock n’ roll grooves with newer hard riffs steering them into the stoner metal genre with nice technical skills and timing. There’s no doubt that getting in front of Down’s larger audiences will do wonders for their future. They were a nice transition between Down and the first band.

Detroit rockers Child Bite opened the show with a rather bombastic post-punk, alternative metal set with a schizophrenic Charles Manson kind of flair. It was hard to box them into a category, but that was probably the point. Experimental, wild, and often jumping genres, one has to see and hear them to be able to process what they’re about and it’s not a bad thing. The word “cooky” came to mind and, if anything, Child Bite had a great time doing what they did. Given vocalist Shawn Knight’s stage antics, their name suits them well.

Down’s tour wrapped up on August 16 in Wilmington, North Carolina following a visit to the famed GwarBQ. If you missed them this time around, peace be with you until they tour again.

Down Setlist: Eyes of the South, Witchtripper, We Knew Him Well, Hogshead/Dogshead, Lifer, Hail the Leaf, Pillars of Eternity, Swan Song, Ghosts Along the Mississippi, Conjure, Losing All. Encore: Stone the Crow, Bury Me in Smoke.
