Blackberry Smoke keep the good times going in Detroit on their Find A Light tour, bringing Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown along for the party.
Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown open the night with a banging hit “Weak And Weeping.” This rock band from Nashville, Tennessee bring the classic rock n roll tunes with a punky punch of attitude that the fans love. Still celebrating the huge success of their self-titled sophomore album, these guys aren’t resting anytime soon, touring with Blackberry Smoke and sharing the stage with Guns N’ Roses this summer.
Tyler Bryant was born to be a showman, rocking guitar and lead vocals, running all over and playing to the crowd with his magnetic charm and true rock n roll swagger. Noah Denney on bass and Graham Whitford on guitar are thunderous on each side of the stage. Caleb Crosby commands your attention on the drums, his talent matched by his stage presence, frequently jumping above his kit and egging the crowd on.
The band plows through hits from their two albums, including “Criminal Imagination,” “House On Fire,” and “Downtown Tonight.” After a bit of banter, Bryant traded his electric guitar for an acoustic and the band performed a spirited Muddy Waters cover, “Got My Mojo Workin.” The slow, grooving beat of “Ramblin Bones” follows, showcasing each member’s talent behind their instrument. Amped for an encore, the band treat the crowd to an interlude of the Bob Segar classic “Old Time Rock n Roll,” with Crosby toting a solo drum in the pit along with the crowd. As soon as he rejoined the band, Bryant thanks the crowd and leads the band into the infectiously catchy “Lipstick Wonder Woman.” This band’s groovy rock sound grabs your attention instantly and sticks with you days after the show.

With the crowd cheering and the night already electric, Blackberry Smoke strides onto the stage with all the confidence in the world, and jumped into “Waiting for the Thunder,” a hit from their 2016 album Like An Arrow. This Southern rock/country rock band from Atlanta, Georgia have been around since 2000, and have been booming in popularity over the past handful of years. Their slogan of “too country for rock, too rock for country” holds true, they skate the line perfectly and have countless fans from both genres. Currently on tour for their sixth and latest album Find A Light, coming out April 6th, the band seem to be getting better with each new album.
This band is full of star power. Charlie Starr lights up the stage with his soulful voice, trading punchy guitar riffs with Paul Jackson. Brothers Richard Turner and Brit Turner were the epitome of cool as they kept the groove of the music on bass and drums, respectively. Brandon Still’s keyboards add that extra tune that is vital to the music of Blackberry Smoke. The band shines with harmonies, belting out songs that truly speak to the soul and lift your spirits.
The crowd was treated to a 20-song long set, journeying throughout their music career, including the vibrant “Shakin’ Hands With the Holy Ghost”, “Ought to Know,” the emotional “The Whippoorwill,” “Up in Smoke,” and more. The band made sure to treat the crowd to a sampling of Find a Light with “Flesh and Bone.” “Sleeping Dogs” was a highlight of the set, the song melding into a cover of “Come Together” spurring a jam session that gave each musician a time to shine.
As the crowd cheered for an encore, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown returned to the stage, joining Blackberry Smoke for a killer rendition of The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil.” Grinning ear to ear, the band ends the night with arguably their biggest hit “Ain’t Much Left of Me”; completed with a sampling of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” before tearing back into the finale of “Ain’t Much Left of Me.”
Blackberry Smoke has always seemed like the ultimate jam band, every show is a party for the band, as well as the crowd. Fans are dancing and singing along with every song, you get swept up into the infectious tunes and good vibes the band exudes throughout the entire show. Find a Light is a perfect addition to the band’s already impressive discography. The band isn’t taking time off anytime soon, touring the U.S. throughout the summer and hitting a long European tour through the fall. Find A Light is available for pre-order at the band’s website.
