Without guitars rock music would cease to exist. The instrument itself is an object of art and once it’s placed in the hands of its player the world is forever changed. Outside of the musicians themselves, no one quite understands this more than Lisa S. Johnson, author of 108 Rock Star Guitars.
Herein lies the ultimate coffee table book. Leather bound and immense in both size and beauty, it’s as equally stunning on the outside as it is on the inside. With a foreword written by Les Paul in 2009, I can’t imagine a higher endorsement. Known to Les as ‘The girl that makes guitar art’, Johnson has spent the last 15 years compiling this amazing collection of artwork. The photos are raw and as full of emotion as the tones that have emitted from the guitars in its pages.
From Ace Frehley’s modified Gibson Les Paul ‘Light Guitar’ photographed at Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas, Nevada at the Kiss ‘Farewell Tour’ on March 17, 2000 to Zakk Wylde’s 1989 Gibson Les Paul ‘The Rebel’ captured at Zakk’s home studio, ‘Black Label Bunker’ on May 25, 2011, almost all the greats are in here. As close up and personal as anyone could ever hope to get. Of course when you’re focusing on only 108 (there’s significance behind this number that I don’t want to spoil for you here), there are some that are bound to be left out though. If Lisa ever releases a second volume I’d like to request any one of Mick Mars’s Fenders or Strats.
Within this collection you won’t find a single shot of Slash, George Lynch, Rick Nielson, or any of the other 105 guitarist whose instruments are featured. The point of this work is to capture the instrument, sans player, and let the guitar itself speak to the reader.
Surprisingly, it becomes unnecessary to view the actual musician. To the guitarist, their soul resides within their instrument. What Johnson has given us here is a look into the very souls of our heroes. Often times scarred and at other times pristine, each and every guitar, on every single page, is as individual as its owner.
Rest assured, you do not need to be a reader to appreciate this book. If you’re a music fan, then it’s for you. Prepare yourself for a night spent in, a bottle of red at your disposal, Roger Waters on repeat, and ‘108 Rock Star Guitars’ on your lap. It’s nothing short of a spiritual experience.
