Detroit rockers, Harlow is playing at Dirt Fest for the first time. Not only will you want to rage, but they’ll help you look good doing it.
This four piece from the greater Detroit area is playing a favorite summer past time for the first time this year. Grab your brass knuckles and join the party. Harlow’s lead singer Lauren Weaver joined us again for a few minutes to talk shop on Dirt Fest 2015 and dropped a progress report on the eagerly anticipated new album, Shattered. See the band’s older interview with National Rock Review if this one just doesn’t give you enough, here.
NRR: You guys are always on the move. What’s been going on with the band in the last year?
Lauren Weaver: We have definitely had a lot going on. We’ve been trying to get out there as much as possible and play to as many new audiences as we can. Playing shows in the surrounding states and setting up a ten day tour in August. We’ve released our first music video for our song “Shattered,†which is also the title track and first single off of our full length album Shattered that is due out in the fall. We’ve been doing a lot of work on that, trying to wrap everything up for the album release.
NRR: Hopefully you guys have a great time on stage this year. Are you looking forward to anything in particular at Dirt Fest 2015?
Lauren Weaver: I’m super excited to be performing at Dirt Fest 2015. I’ve been attending the past couple years and we’ve always had a blast so it’s awesome that we get to play this year instead of just attending. There are so many great bands that we’ll get to see. I’m looking forward to see all the new things happening this year, especially since it’s two days. Every year just gets better and better.
NRR: Will we hear any new material at Dirt Fest this year?
Lauren Weaver: There will be a few new tracks that we will play that will be on the new album. With all the shows we’ve been playing, I like to change up the set list from time to time so I’m sure the Dirt Fest set list will have some new tunes on it.
NRR: What gets a bigger rush, being on stage for a huge festival like Dirt Fest, or being in a small, packed venue sweating on 200 of your most loyal fans?

Lauren Weaver: We love playing in front of any crowd that will listen. It’s always exciting to play in front of a large crowd though because you get to feed off of everyone’s great energy. Everyone is there for the same thing and it’s amazing to be a part of that.
NRR: What has been the most bizarre thing you guys have experienced while on stage?
Lauren Weaver: Oh lord, (laughing). A while back, Joe was getting into it during a set and fell into one of Kevin’s cymbals. As he fell back, Kevin had to catch him and push him back into a standing position. I didn’t even know it had happened because neither of them never missed a beat. It wasn’t until I saw the photos that I realized what had gone on behind me…good times (laughing).
NRR: What can we expect from Harlow, especially with the next album coming in the next few months, we hope!?
Lauren Weaver: We’ve had to push the album back quite a few times and I know everyone is getting frustrated about it (laughing), fans and us alike. We originally wanted it to come out in the spring but we ran into a couple snags. We’re back on track and plan to be getting a lot more work done with it. With as much as we’ve been playing, we try to find as much time as possible to finish up the album. We’re going to be going on a 10 day tour in August with some friends in Mercy Beach presented by The Sights Set North Agency. I’m super excited about that. Doing the “weekend warrior†shows has been awesome but I’m anxious to see how we’re all going to do being stuck with each other for 10 days straight, (laughing). We’ll also be coming out with a release of our cover song “Dark Horse†along with a fun video for everyone. It’s going to be a free download so make sure to keep an eye out for that!
NRR: Is there a band or bands on this year’s Dirt Fest line-up that you are looking forward to seeing as fans?
Lauren Weaver: I’ve heard a lot about We Are Harlot, so I’m excited to see them. I haven’t seen Down or Taproot in a couple years so it will be good to see them, also. I always love seeing Psychostick and It Lies Within. Both of those bands put on an amazing live show. And I’m definitely not missing Critical Bill or Heartsick.
NRR: How important is selling merch for a band like Harlow at a festival like this, especially with a great set-up like yours?
Lauren Weaver: Well, first off, thank you very much! Being at a large festival presents a great opportunity for merch sales. Even if a person hasn’t heard of your band and you have an awesome merch item available, you can get them interested and talking, and possibly gain a new fan. With so many bands and vendors present at a festival of this size, you have to make sure you can stand out and get people to notice you. With so many people walking around, you want people to ask, “Where’d you get that?!†We didn’t even play last year and I was flinging our wristbands into the crowd, so I’m sure that will be happening again this year, (laughing). We’ll have some awesome new stuff available too so make sure you stop by and say hi!
Harlow – “Shattered”
NRR: For anyone that might not have heard your music before, what can they expect to get from you guys on stage?
Lauren Weaver: We always give 150%, no matter what. We are all very passionate about what we do and we hope that comes across in our live performance. We just like to have fun and give people a great show. We want everyone to walk away from a Harlow show with a little piece of us.
NRR: On the drive up from Detroit, who is the first one to get stir crazy and finds interesting ways to stay entertained, (laughing)?
Lauren Weaver: Most likely, that would be me, (laughing). I get really anxious and goofy when I get really excited for opportunities like this. We all get pretty silly when we’re stuck in car together, but that’s what makes it fun and gets us pumped for the show. I can’t wait to see how awesome everything will be at Dirt Fest 2015!! See you guys there!!!
