Midwestern punkers Mono In Stereo releases official music video for “Different Kind of Man”, from their recently released Can’t Stop the Bleeding album.
From the ashes of long time pop punk stalwarts Mulligan Stu, comes Mono In Stereo. With an honest approach and eclectic influences, Mono In Stereo take a no holds barred approach to their song craft. From Springsteen to Mould, Earle to Costello, Mono In Stereo merge a variety of divergent musical interests into their own special blend of Midwest punk.
Directed by Joselito Seldera, the video for “Different Kind of Man” is something a little out of the box for the band. Something not so ‘Midwest.’ Starring Joselito and Nicole Serrat (known for her work on the TV Series’ Hip Hop Cabaret and Enemies of Dorothy), the video has an old school movie road trip kind of vibe that takes the couple all over the southern California desert.
Joselito’s connection with the band goes way back to their Mulligan Stu days. He and guitarist Billy Maynard grew up together in the small, tourist town of Fontana, Wisconsin. Theirs were two of the very few families that lived in that town year-round while most everyone else in the area were summering Chicagoans. The two grew up appreciating skateboarding and punk rock while making frequent road trips to the skate park in Rockford, Illinois (the town which singer/guitarist Kevin Kalen is from). This is where everyone would eventually meet.
Billy joined Mulligan Stu and Joselito went to film school in California. Fast forward many years. Billy and Kevin would start-up their current band Mono In Stereo while Joselito would become a filmmaker of some repute, including writing and directing multiple short and feature movies and music videos.
While finishing up the latest Mono In Stereo record, Can’t Stop the Bleeding, Joselito reached out to Billy regarding a project, Screw City, which he was in preproduction on. It was a sort of coming-of-age story about a rustbelt-city teenager trying to escape his dead-end life through his punk rock band.
Written, directed and co-produced by Joselito Seldera, Screw City is set in Rockford and Chicago, Illinois. The film follows a guy named Chuck, who is only weeks away from graduating high school in Rockford, IL. As his peers are getting ready to leave town and move on with their lives, Chuck’s greatest fear is being stuck in Rockford for the rest of his life, alone. His only way out depends on the success of his punk rock band, Stick Figure. That is, if he can convince his best friends/bandmates to stick it out with him.
Joselito made the video for “Different Kind of Man” while waiting for everything to come together on the Screw City project. If you like what you hear, head over to Rum Bar Records and order the band’s new record here.
