The Steepwater Band brewed a batch of blazing blues fueled rock for a packed house in Detroit.
Sometimes it doesn’t take much to make you happy. Good beer, good food, and great music can make for an evening of smiles. Chicago’s Steepwater Band and Detroit’s own Nina and the Buffalo Riders provided the great music with HopCat Detroit’s Huma Room providing the great beer and food. It was a trifecta of perfection.
Nina and the Buffalo Riders have been steadily building a following in Detroit with music that aches with soul and burns with the heart of rock. The band was in great form during their set on the Huma Room stage. The sound system exquisitely captured the rolling waves of bluesy music. The entire band beamed with a joyful vibe that reverberated through their songs. The band featured the passionate vocals of Nina Sophia which when accompanied by Adam Enriquez (guitar), Ryan Meadows (guitar), A.J. Jezewski (drums), Mike Fritz (keyboards), and Ramiro Romero (bass) gave the crowd a musical stew that hinted at influences of The Grateful Dead, Tedeschi-Trucks Band, and Janis Joplin.
Things got down and dirty as the Steepwater Band took the stage and rocked out with “Fire Away.” The band delivered everything you would look for in a blues-rock band with fiery guitar work by Jeff Massey and Eric Saylors. The guitar was beautifully framed in the tight rhythmic pocket formed by drummer Joe Winters and bassist Tod Bowers. The delta blues influence in Steepwater came shining through when they jammed “Collison” and “High and Humble.” The slide guitar work of Jeff Massey was hot butter on a biscuit with a shot of moonshine on the side.
The Steepwater Band closed their set with a foot stomping cover of “Boom, Boom” by John Lee Hooker that morphed into “How Many More Times” by Led Zeppelin. After a thunderous applause from the crowd, the band came out for an encore that finished with “World Keeps Moving On.” This was an amazing nightcap to an evening of great music and beer at HopCat Detroit’s Huma Room.
