The Medusa make their first Hampton Roads appearance with support from Slaghead, Celestial Slag, and SiNN for an evening of stoner/doom and thrash metal.
Originally the show had Til the Casket Drops in the event lineup. However, the casket did indeed drop as the band had to cancel due to scheduling commitments.
Hampton-based Slaghead started the night off with a short, but energetic, set of songs from their yet to be released CD.
Celestial Slag, the Norfolk-based doom metallers with current and former members of Synaptic Decay, Murder No Motive, Battlecock, Great Green Ghost, and The Snakes were second to play with their take on doom and sludge metal. Their set included “Oligarchs as Terabytes” and “Billion Dollar Bet.”
Mixing things up a bit, the Newport News thrashers, Stranded in Newport News or SiNN, brought a serious change in tempo as they played material from their two CDs and mixed in a few new songs perfect for a mosh pit.
The Medusa take the stage last, the crowd ready for the headliner to make their return to Chesapeake. Their previous performance was cancelled due to the recent “Snowmageddon.” Due to travel problems, the band started their set 20 minutes late and the crowd had thinned out some. However, the delay did nothing to dampen the spirits of the faithful who remained. The Medusa delivered a blistering set from their almost finished CD, including “Routine Machine” and “Crooked Smile.”
For the Hampton Roads fans of stoner and doom metal, this was their night and the bands that played left no one disappointed.
