South By So What?! music festival 2015 is a hit.

There were a few doubts going into this year’s South By So What?! (SBSW), such foul weather as in previous years, and would all the bands take the stage. Those were everyone’s main concerns. Although the first day, it did shower and drizzle, precautions taken this year helped make this SBSW a success.

Day one, March 20, included bands like Mayday Parade, Circa Survive, La Dispute, and The Maine. These artists drew an older crowd than is normally seen at SBSW, even than both young and old enjoyed the lineup.

Day two, March 21, began with a larger crowd waiting for the gates to open. The lineup included bands such as For Today, Memphis May Fire, and Motionless in White as headliners. With well know national acts, larger attendance was expected, but there was one surprise.

Caleb Shomo and the rest of Beartooth had one of (if not the) biggest crowds of the festival. The high energy stage presence mixed with a piercing voice in Shomo caught the eye and ears of many of the attendees on day two. Fans were packed in shoulder to shoulder in order to get closer to the stage. Although a 35-minute set wasn’t nearly enough for the thousands of people in attendance, this is one of those bands to keep an eye on in the next couple years as they have the potential to be headline act.

Another festival surprise was New Years Day, making it their SBSW debut. Fronted by singer Ash Costello, with their heavy, slow paced sound captivated a great percentage of the crowd. Their inclusion in the SBSW lineup was a long time coming as fans have been asking for them for years now. New Years Day are currently on the road with Motionless in White on their Beyond the Barricade Tour. Big things are ahead for this band if they keep consistent and continue to expand their fan base.

Overall, the feeling of SBSW has always been friendly and welcoming. Due to the interaction via social media between promoters and fans, SBSW is known for giving fans exactly what they want. For most cases, that’s their secret to success.
