The annual homage tour to the late great Jimi Hendrix triumphantly returns to The Chicago Theatre.

The Experience Hendrix tour is now into it’s second decade, and if tonight’s crowd is anything to go by, is as popular as ever. Drawing some of the biggest names in blues and rock, it is an amazing show to see with these stars all coming together on one stage.

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Hendrix’s Are You Experienced, which makes it all the more special to be able to attend as part of the celebration. Honoring the iconic and arguably one of the most influential guitarists in history are an array of stars in their own right, both old and new. Beth Hart brought her vocal prowess to proceedings, while Dweezil Zappa and Kenny Wayne Shepherd lent their own flavor to the ever popular licks.

The revolving lineup was sure to include the most popular Hendrix songs, such as “All Along The Watchtower”, ” Purple Haze” and “Voodoo Child”. Zakk Wylde has become synonymous with his performance of “Little Wing” during his live shows and tonight’s audience were treated to his renowned off-stage, playing behind the head extravaganza. The audience lapped up the electric performances, often taking to their feet by way of a standing ovation, or just simply to dance the night away.

The headliner of the evening was a personal friend of the man of honor and adopted Chicagoan, Buddy Guy. Bringing the entire Chicago crowd to their feet to welcome him on stage, an impressive way to round out the incredible lineup.

With a lineup such as this, it is difficult to single any one performance out. Buddy Guy provided the stellar performance we all know and love him for. Ana Popovic‘s equally strong vocal and guitar performance was well received by the audience, as was Johnny Lang‘s. However, Kenny Wayne Shepherd‘s performance certainly set the standard.

You don’t need to be a huge Hendrix fan to be able to come and enjoy a show like this. However, you can’t walk away from it without being affected. Feeling how much all of these musicians have been influenced by someone whose career was cut so tragically short, is an amazing thing to witness. The fact that this tour has been happening for so long, and attracting huge stars such as these, is true testament to the reach his music has had and is continuing to have.
