Renowned country singer and songwriter Eric Paslay recently returned to The Intersection in Grand Rapids, Michigan and National Rock Review was on hand to experience first hand the buzz surrounding the Texas native.

Eric Paslay initially made a name for himself by penning hits for more high-profile country artists including Jake Owen, Rascal Flats, and Lady Antebellum. That success led to collaborations with other industry heavyweights such as Amy Grant, Dierks Bentley, and Sheryl Crow.

Despite those achievements, Paslay in recent years has made a concerted effort to step out of the shadows in an attempt to establish himself as a bona fide solo country artist.

Based on the crowd’s response to Paslay from the first note played on the evening to the band’s final bow, it sure seems as though the risk the towering redhead has taken in an attempt to transition from songwriter to performer has paid off in spades.

Taking the stage to a backdrop of screaming fans, Paslay opened up his set with “Keep On Fallin,” the lead track off of his critically well received 2014 self-titled debut before segueing into an impromptu crowd sing-a-long to another one of his hits, “Song About a Girl.”

Paslay played his many singles, songs he wrote for other artists such as the Will Hoge Eli Young Band track, “Even if it Breaks Your Heart,” and two covers, the Rolling Stones “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and the Willie Nelson classic, “On the Road Again.”

Paslay also surprised the crowd by unleashing a few songs that will appear on his yet to be released sophomore LP including a tune called “Backstage Pass,” that featured show opener Lindsay Ell on guitar and Paslay himself on harmonica.

The evening’s main set list concluded with Paslay choosing to play another song off of his self-titled debut, “Less Than Whole,” followed by the band returning to the stage one final time to end the night with one of Paslay’s most recognizable hits, “Friday Night.”

Based on the sheer diversity of the music at his disposal and level of live performance, Paslay and his band are capable of delivering on the lighted stage, it’s not hard to imagine that fans will be seeing his star rise to new levels when Paslay’s second LP hits the inter-webs later this year.

Primary support for Paslay on the evening was provided by Canadian-born country artist Lindsay Ell. Ell often referred to as the female Keith Urban due to her sublime talent as a guitarist, held nothing back as she effortlessly weaved a mix of rock and blues-based country that easily won the entirety of the crowd over.

Local DJ Jay Vee, serving as local support for Palsay’s Grand Rapids performance, served up a selection of country hits mixed with a few dance numbers that properly primed the Intersection’s crowd for the evening to come.
