Swedish death metal giants At The Gates headline the fifth annual Decibel Magazine Tour at a sold out Regency Ballroom in San Francisco.

With a line up of At The Gates, Converge, Pallbearer, and Vallenfyre, this year’s installment of the Decibel Magazine tour features one of its most diverse line-ups to date, and arguably, one of its finest.

Headliners At The Gates returned to San Francisco for the first time in almost seven years and did not disappoint their fans. They performed many of their older classics including: “Windows”, “Kingdom Gone”, and “Raped By The Light Of Christ”. The band was in top form, and are poised to annihilate their audience as the tour continues to roll across the states.

In direct support on the Decibel tour are Massachusetts hardcore band Converge, and although some may wonder if they fit in on a bill with death and doom metal bands, the answer is a resounding YES. Vocalist Jacob Bannon was a man possessed on stage, and as he and his band mates belted out “You Fail Me”, “Reap What You Sow”, and “Concubine”, there was no doubt that they were a perfect fit for the tour.

Perhaps the sleeper band of the evening (and on the tour) was Pallbearer. With their slow and sludgy riffs, every song was a momentous exhibition of doom at it’s finest. It’s a shame that they were only allotted 30 minutes, although they definitely made the most of it.

Second on the bill were Vallenfyre, a band comprised of members of At The Gates, My Dying Bride, Doom, and Paradise Lost. With a sound that can best be described as death metal with a little black and thrash metal thrown in for good measure, and they put on a short but crushing set.

The regional opener for the San francisco date was Cormorant, who have a somewhat progressive black/death metal sound, and they did a great job of setting they vibe for the evening.
