Confidence is something you need on stage. Own that shit and the crowd will bounce on command. Don’t and well, it’s only twenty minutes, newbie.

Zachary Scott (vocals), Matthew Groshart (guitars), Kyle Dameron (guitars), Erik McKay (bass), and Kamron Mead (drums) are part of one hell of a hard working and touring metal band from Flint, MI known to the mass as It Lies Within. The guys are nonstop touring from now until they drop from exhaustion at some point down the road. Having released Paramount in January of 2016, the guys are balls to the wall in new music and confidence in their stage presence.

In what will be a rare moment of calm in the storm of a touring band, we threw a lure and managed to get Zachary to sit down with us to discuss a few things like new music, the ever going tour machine the band is, and wearing booty shorts. Some things seen can never be unseen but we, at National Rock Review, will take the bullet for our readers. When you’re done buying merch or reading this interview gem, hit us up on Twitter in your best 144 or on our Facebook and let us hear your voice, just keep the caps to a minimum. No one likes a yeller, just saying.

NRR: Thanks for taking some time out of your busy schedule to answer some questions for National Rock Review’s Dirt Fest 2016, again, coverage. What’s been going on with the band, It Lies Within, so far in 2016?
Zachary Scott: Hey thanks for having us. 2016 has been a great year for us. We released our sophomore album, Paramount, in January and have basically toured all year in support of that. It’s been a blast.
NRR: You guys just finished the Fight The Parasites Tour and start another tour less then a week after Dirt Fest 2016. Can any of you guys point out your own bed in a police lineup at this point?
Zachary Scott: (Laughing), We are normally on our best behavior. The road does take it’s toll but we still many goals to achieve and we will not stop til we meet them. We keep fighting the good fight.
NRR: When I first met you guys, it was at a train wreck of a festival in Ann Arbor three maybe four years ago. Are you guys the same band from then or have you gone through the fires and changed, hopefully for the better, or at least a little more wise in the music game?
Zachary Scott: All bands evolve. It’s up to the listener to determine whether it’s better or worse. With our member changes and new line up we feel more confident than ever. Paramount definitely represents this bands new direction.

Who has seen us LIVE in concert? Tell us where and when in the comments below. Also, feel free to post pics if you have them!

NRR: Two questions, did you really give away some cool, free merch? And will you promise to never “model” your booty shorts again until you at least get a tan?
Zachary Scott: We like to hold share contests on our social media pages and giveaway free stuff. We do this pretty often actually. It’s always awesome seeing people in our merch. Especially if it’s in our booty shorts, (laughing).
NRR: How does it feel to play a well established festival like Dirt Fest and a big couple of tours, among other shows, in the same summer?
Zachary Scott: Festival season is our favorite. This band thrives on playing to the bigger crowds. We are certainly blessed to have played main stage so many years at Dirt Fest. Shout out to Matt Dalton and his team for doing such a great job. It’s cool to see this festival and our band grow each year.
NRR: Sex, rock ‘n’ roll, … and Pokémon Go? Do we need to plan an intervention on the main stage to get the band off the path of those little demon spawn? You know, copious amounts of whiskey, perfumed female undergarments thrown with wild abandon, or even a good game of D&D before the new tour starts?
Zachary Scott: We encourage that if you party, do it posi style. Meaning keep your cool and have a good time. Half of us play Pokemon Go and the other half play other games as well. We definitely love our gaming in this band.
NRR: Are mutual advertising deals from whiskey, clothing, or tattoo companies good for bands when there’s no money involved?
Zachary Scott: It all depends on who you’re working with. We love our sponsors! Shout out to INKAddict, Music Over Matter Clothing, and Empire Clothing.
NRR: If you were in the crowd after your set, and heard two people talking about It Lies Within, how would you hope the conversation might go?
Zachary Scott: Hope the conversation would go? We know the conversation would go “dang those guys just killed it!” and/or “ these guys are on the rise!” We say this with confidence because we work very hard on our performance. Let’s bounce!

NRR: What song would you play on stage that would be a cover done with a ILW flavor to get the crowd going in a few weeks over in Pontiac?
Zachary Scott: It’s funny you ask because we might have something special in store. You’re gonna have to stay tuned to our social media pages.
NRR: Are you guys still music fans outside of being on stage, and if so, is there anyone on the Dirt Fest bill you’re excited to catch since everyone plays on the same day this year?
Zachary Scott: This year’s lineup is one of the better one’s in our opinion. It’s gonna be awesome sharing the main stage with all the great bands. Some of our favorites are Killswitch Engage, Hatebreed, Asking Alexandria, Attila, For the Fallen Dreams, and Sea of Treachery. We also wanna give a shout out to our good friends in I Set My Friends On Fire, Below The Tide, and Crossing Rubicon also playing.
